Fish Community Studies

The fish communities were sampled routinely in spring and fall samples below (MCK 1.6) and above (MCK 1.9) Rogers Quarry. Quantitative samples provided data on species richness, abundance and biomass. Qualitative samples were also made occasionally in Rogers Quarry.  The fish community at MCK 1.9 remained limited to a single species introduced in 1995, however the species abundance had increased through 1997 (Figure 1).

Fish densities, biomass, and species richness at MCK 1.6 have been relatively stable since the early 1990s (Figure 1).

However, the occurrence in and below Rogers Quarry of abnormalities such as bone deformities, fin erosion, or distended eyes (See Photo) has decreased from an unusually high percetage (~25%) during 1989-1991 (at the end of the period of fly ash disposal) to an expected range (<1%) by late 1992.
