Scientist, Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Archive Oak Ridge National Laboratory Giriprakash Palanisamy is a research staff member in the Environmental Sciences Division of ORNL where he serves as a Senior Informatics Analyst on various data center projects including the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Archive, the ORNL Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) for Biogeochemical Dynamics, National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Metadata Clearinghouse, Metadata Consortium Projects (Mercury), Data Observation Network for Earth (DataOne), the Wind Energy Data and Informatics Gateway (WENDI), and the North American Portal for Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Palanisamy's research focus includes scientific data management and discovery, metadata and data interoperability, and web services and visualization.
Palanisamy designed, developed, and maintains new web user interfaces for browsing and ordering ARM Archive data. With DAAC, he is involved in various metadata interoperability activities. He is the System Architect for the Mercury distributed metadata management, data discovery and access tool, where he is currently managing more than 15 Mercury projects funded by various federal organizations. Palanisamy is also Principal Investigator for US Geological Survey-sponsored NBII Metadata Clearinghouse project, which serves over 92,000 metadata records and hosts various web services for accessing the biological data. He also manages the North American mirror portal for GBIF, which serves over 200 million specimen records from around the world.
Palanisamy received an MS in environmental science from Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada in 2000. He also holds a Diploma in Object Oriented Software Technology from the University of Calgary, Canada and both an MS in soil science and a BS in agriculture from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore, India. He is also actively participating in various working groups related to metadata standards (e.g., ISO 19115, Energy Metadata standards) and scientific data discovery and interoperability. Prior to his work at ORNL, he was an internet application developer for Critical Mass—a software development company in Calgary, Canada that produces digital media for some of the world's premier companies.
