Sturgeons and paddlefishes are ancient species that arose over 200 MY ago.
Most sturgeons are anadromous. They tend not to have a very wide geographic distribution because they are associated with a particular combination of coastal estuary and the large rivers feeding into it.
The white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in North America, living to 80-100 years.
