Simulation Model Examples

The model is being designed to operate in a gaming mode to allow investigation into the impacts of alternative regional land-use futures on variables that potentially impact military operations in three ways:

  1. direct impacts of regional land use change on military operations—for example,
    • regional land-use changes can alter air and water quality on-post, thereby affecting health of military personnel or leading to curtailment of activities during certain weather conditions,
    • growth in off-post vehicular traffic can impact transportation on and off the installation;
  2. indirect impacts of regional land use change on military operations—for example,
    • population growth adjacent to installation boundaries can restrict noise (weapon firing, helicopter flights) or air pollutant generating activities (burning, vehicle traffic);
  3. direct impacts of regional land-use activities on conservation/compliance concerns on military installations—for example,
    • destruction of off-post habitat required for regional sustainability of on-post populations of threatened and endangered species and game species;
    • reduction in the quality of water entering the base to such an extent that military operations must be curtailed or reduced to maintain compliance with criteria for water leaving the post.
