Natural ponds influenced by contaminants

The Massachusetts Military Reservation Study

Researchers have conducted bioindicator studies of natural ponds on the Massachusetts Military Reservation near Cape Cod to investigate the effects of contaminated underground plumes on the health of four species of freshwater fish in the ponds.

Integrated health responses of largemouth bass were measured at reference ponds and contaminated ponds on the Massachusetts Military Reservation, based on 15-20 individual responses at each site.

Researchers measured the frequency of mouth and body tumors in bullhead catfish collected from two contaminated ponds and two reference ponds on the Massachusetts Military Reservation.
